Wikipedia states:
Bánh mì is a Vietnamese baguette made with wheat and rice flour, as well as a type
of sandwich traditionally made with this type of baguette. The sandwich is made up
of thinly sliced pickled carrots, cucumbers, cilantro, jalapeño peppers and
meat. Popular bánh mì fillings include roasted or grilled pork, Vietnamese ham and pate.
Most Banh Mi sandwiches contain a Vietnamese mayonnaise-like spread that is a
mixture of egg yolk, cooking oil/butter, and sometimes spices.
Bánh mì is generally served in small shops and at some pho(soup) noodle eateries.
Bánh mì shops can be found in many countries, especially in areas with a Vietnamese
immigrant community. The contrasting flavors and textures of the sandwich — as well
as its relatively low cost — make it a popular dish.

Bahn Mi = Vietnamese PoBoy
Now that you know about banh mi...let me advise of the best in the Houston area. Hoang's is a very small sandwich & pho shop in the atrium of the Asian supermarket. They serve exceptional sandwiches. I think I have tried them all. My favorite is the pate. All the ingredients are fresh and the baguette itself is crispy on the outside & soft on the inside (kinda like me). If you are new to Vietnamese sandwiches, then you can play it safe & get the charcoaled pork. I sometimes get mine TO-GO and Anglo it up by adding mayonaise when I get home (boo-hiss).
The average price per Bahn mi is approximately $2.
Theres no way to go wrong here.
Be advised that you won't be getting chips and/or fries like at the fast-food. That in itself is worth a visit because its guaranteed to shave 600+ calories off your lunch menu.

Hoang's gets an EYEBALL UP from JudgedByJody!
